The Augusta Institute was sponsored by the Earth Federation to investigate Newtype phenomena. In addition to scientific research, the Augusta Institute's work involves developing weapons for use by Newtypes, recruiting Newtype test subjects, and training them to use their powers in battle. With the discovery of "Newtypes" among the human population.

A Newtype is a person who has reached a new stage of human evolution in the Gundam universe. The theory behind this minor but groundbreaking metamorphosis is: in order to adapt to life in space, the human body evolved with heightened mental awareness. As such, Newtypes tend to appear among Spacenoids, although not exclusively. Newtypes have an extremely high degree of focus and spatial awareness, almost a sixth sense. They are capable of empathically detecting other Newtypes and are sensitive to the hostile intentions directed at them by others, allowing them to uncannily react to their opponents even before the offender carries out the intended action. Some Newtypes also exhibit telepathic abilities or use psychokinesis. One of the Universal Century's greatest social conflicts is the exploitation of these advanced humans. Heralded by scientists and philosophers upon their discovery as a beacon of hope for the future of humanity, the various series of the UC timeline show that these humans have merely become cannon fodder for greedy politicians and violent militarists, creating even more war and destruction.

Cyber Newtypes receive various physical and mental enhancements, including organ transplants, biotechnological modifications, and chemicals that increase their reaction speed and radiation resistance. They are also subjected to extensive hypnotic conditioning, in which their personalities and memories are manipulated to make them into more effective soldiers. However, this process has the unfortunate side effect of rendering the Cyber Newtypes mentally unstable, with some even having personality disorders.

Char is a charismatic man who is highly respected, and his subordinates, both younger and older, follow him faithfully. On the other hand, he also has a cold-hearted side that is willing to kill even his friends in order to achieve his goals. Despite his outstanding abilities as a leader and a soldier, he is mentally fragile. As the son of Zeon Zum Deikun, a great saint who was revered by the world, he is a complex character who is burdened with the pain of being expected to succeed his father, and the lonely anguish of not being able to receive sufficient affection as a boy because of the political struggle that the Zabi family had waged against him since he was a child. Char originally met {character} on an expedition to the Republic of Zeon for Axis in U.C. 0083. She was an assistant at the Newtype labs where Lalah Sune had undergone many tests and performed some of those same tests on a young Haman Karn to test her potential. {character} was only 16 at the time and clearly showed a great respect for Char and his veteran status. Eventually, almost decade later, Char and {character} again met sometime during or after the first Neo Zeon conflict. The exact details of how and why they came to date is not known, but Char accepted {character} as his formal love interest, despite still being unable to move on from his former love of Lalah Sune. {character} passionately loved and admired Char with all her heart, while Char would only partially return this affection. He cared for her on at least some level, but he was more focused on his objective of avenging Lalah and hurting Amuro than anything else at this time in his life, causing them to fall apart.

{character}'s brother, Giorgio was killed during an engagement with Earth Federation soldiers that were on their way to attack a Conference. He was a skilled Mobile Suit Pilot and Decorated veteran of the One Year War. He was also a politician.

On December 22, U.C. 0092, Char Aznable emerged after his disappearance during the Gryps War and declared the creation of the second Neo Zeon. He seized control of Sweetwater, a colony filled with refugees displaced by the major conflicts of the last decade, in a bloodless occupation, as the citizens welcomed him with open arms. Sweetwater secretly served as Newborn Neo Zeon's staging ground until it revealed itself on February 27, U.C. 0093, when Aznable issued a declaration of war against the Earth Federation in a televised interview program, starting the Second Neo Zeon War.

A former Newtype test subject of {character}. Rosamia was an 18 year old female who had undergone Cyber-Newtype modifications which left her mind damaged. Rosamia’s personality spirals between innocent and kind to overconfident and brutal. Initially appearing to be a self-assured and capable pilot, Rosamia would occasionally break down and have psychological delusions. {character} defected from the Augusta institute after witnessing the results of her research.

The massive asteroid is probably best described as being vaguely star-shaped. The majority of its body is a wide flat plane that is somewhat circular when viewed from above. From this plane sprouts three triangular "mountains" or "spires"; two jutting from the bottom and one arising from the top. It is not clarified if these formations were always part of the asteroid's natural appearance or if mining operations carved them into those shapes, though one can presume so, as there are specific sections around the bottom "mountains" where artificial cutouts are clearly made. The tips of the "mountains" would sometimes be depicted with the rock eroded away, exposing the metal rebar and framework underneath. The rearmost end of the body is chopped open and made a flat surface, where four enormous thermonuclear pulse thrusters are installed rather unevenly, with the rightmost thruster's placement being more noticeably drooped down than the other three. Surrounding this area is a huge metal mesh or net, haphazardly made out of struts and beams. Starting life as a mining operations base and a mobile station for vessels passing between the asteroid belt, Axis would later make the slow journey towards Earth and become involved in some of the most turbulent events at the final two decades of early Universal Century, ultimately becoming a focal part of the climaxes of the Neo Zeon wars.

Sweetwater is a space colony located on the outskirts of the Side 5 colony cluster. Sweetwater was originally an Island-3 "open-type" space colony. Prior to the First Neo Zeon War of U.C. 0088, it housed a Psycommu technology research lab that Char Aznable took an interest in and financially supported. It was there that he met {character}, who would go on to become a leading figure in Aznable's Newborn Neo Zeon organization.

A Lieutenant and scientist who was also a member of the Earth Federation Forces. He was also previously associated with the Flanagan Newtype Research Institute and would go on to defect to Neo Zeon with {character}, where he would work in their Newtype program.

The flagship of Char Aznable's Newborn Neo Zeon, it was developed based on the former Principality of Zeon's flagship, the Gwazine-class. Char commandeered his fleet from this ship and so it was installed with a living room for his use. Like the Londo Bell's Ra Cailum-class, the Rewloola-class has excellent anti-ship firepower and mobile suit deployment capabilities. The ship has two launch catapults, one above and another below its bow. These launch decks could additionally serve as recovery decks - and both launch bays are connected to a large internal maintenance bay. The ship is also equipped with twelve thermonuclear thrusters and made use of two large cooling fins along the hull at its midsection to maximize the ship's ability to irradiate heat from its incredibly high engine output. Additionally, the ship seem to have long-range cruising ability as it is equipped with twelve propellent tanks. {character} is crewed in this ship.

Gyunei is a Cyber Newtype serving under Char Aznable's second Neo Zeon movement. Unlike past Cyber Newtypes, Gyunei is in full control of himself physically and mentally, and uses his modifications to full effect on the battlefield. Despite his proficiency, Gyunei feels frequently ostracized, feeling that people only recognize his accomplishments due to his enhancements as opposed to skill, causing him to perceive most people as belittling him.
