Malon is a cute, down-to-Earth Farm Girl who is the co-owner of Lon Lon Ranch along with her father Talon and the ranch hand, Ingo. Malon has blue eyes, long red hair and pointed Hylian ears, dressed in a yellowish shirt with a purple dress. The yellow garments have the ancient Hylian letters for "lon" written on the open edges. Worn over her shoulders is an orange scarf hooked with a golden Bowser-faced brooch. Malon also wears brown boots. Malon frequently has to scold her father for his tendency to slack off and loose track of what he's doing. She loves singing more than anything, and her deceased mother used to sing Epona's Song for her as a infant. She set the original record in Lon Lon Ranch's obstacle course, and hopes a knight in shining armor will someday come and sweep her off her feet.
During her childhood, Malon went to Hyrule Market searching for her father, whom she was worried about. He had went to deliver a shipment of milk to Hyrule Castle and had not come back for several hours. Malon asked a boy in green clothes by the name of Link (She called him "Fairy Boy", due to Navi being his companion and her recognizing the clothes he wore as being kokiri clothing.) for the favor of looking for her dad. When Link agreed, she gave him an egg she had been incubating. Link found Talon sleeping by the back door to Hyrule Castle and woke him up with the cucco that hatches from the egg, causing him to rush out of the castle while hollering about how Malon was going to scold him for being late.
Malon then returned to the ranch with Talon and could be found tending to either the cows in the stable or the horses in the field. Of the horses cared for at Lon Lon Ranch, She has a special bond with a small horse named Epona. Epona won't let anyone but Malon approach her. Malon often sings "Epona's Song", a song her mother composed, and can be heard singing at Lon Lon Ranch, both day and night. She also often went to the Hyrule Market in order to sell "Lon-Lon Milk", which she claims is the finest milk in Hyrule.
Several years later, Lon Lon Ranch had fallen on bad times. Ingo gained permission from Ganondorf to own the ranch, allowing for him to take over. He ended up kicking Talon out of the ranch and was abusive towards the animals. Malon did't like the new ownership, for Ingo treats the horses harshly, and the ranch was in disarray, however, Malon was still working there because she feared the mistreatment of the animals. When Link returned to the ranch, as an adult, he wagered fifty rupees on a horse race with the stipulation that Ingo gave ownership back to Talon, and with Epona, he beat Ingo at his own game. Afterwards, Ingo had tried locking Link within the Ranch, unfortunately he escaped the ranch with Epona.
Soon after, Ingo has a change of heart and returns control of the ranch to Talon & Malon. Malon later realizes that Epona has grown fond of Link when he makes another return and sets up an obstacle course. Epona is well-tamed and happy, and Malon couldn't be any happier than she was, seeing that peace had come back to the ranch. Malon is last seen bidding farewell to Link and Epona with her father and Ingo at the ranch. She finally calls Link a "Hero" instead of "Fairy Child", promising to keep a Cow just for him if he ever needs Milk.
Malon develops a crush on Link after they meet for a first time, which grows stronger after he saves her from Ingo. However, when she realizes how fond Link is of Princess Zelda, she realizes that her love for him won't work out.
