Persona
Gato
is a man of honor and a soldier through and through who cares for his comrades and seeks to vindicate the memory of his friends and family who died at the hands of the Earth Federation. He is a charismatic leader, doing his part to rally the Zeon remnants, both in and outside the Delaz Fleet, to support Operation Stardust and fight one last crusade against the Federation (even if it meant dying in the process). The fact he is willing to fight alongside others on the frontlines only endears his men further, and while he holds nothing but hatred for the Federation, he still respects those who fight for it; in fact, he demonstratively sees his opponents simply as misguided, believing that they are sacrificing their lives for a corrupt regime, rather than objects of hatred. Along with this,
Gato
also recognized skilled and/or determined opponents as equals, as shown by his treatment of Kou Uraki after their duel at Solomon.
During the One Year War,
Gato
served under Dozle Zabi's Space Attack Force. At the rank of lieutenant,
Gato
participated in Operation British and was one of the pilots who received an award from Dozle for his accomplishments during the battle, alongside Char Aznable, Norris Packard, and Shin Matsunaga. In September of 0079, he became a captain and commander of the 302nd Patrol Squadron, of which Karius was also a member. During this time, he piloted a custom-painted MS-06R-1A Zaku II High Mobility Type. He also became good friends with Kelley Layzner, and the two fought side by side during the Battle of Solomon.
During the Battle of Solomon, he piloted the beam bazooka-equipped MS-09RS Rick Dom and led Solomon's mobile suits against the Federation's mobile weapons. After Solomon fell, he and his squadron acted as the rear guard of the Dolowa as it retreated toward A Baoa Qu, dealing severe damage to the pursuing Federation fleet and earning him the nickname "Nightmare of Solomon".
During the Battle of A Baoa Qu,
Gato
, piloting his custom MS-14A Gelgoog, deployed from the Dolowa and fought the Earth Federation Forces. After losing his Gelgoog's right arm in battle, he landed on Aiguille Delaz's personal ship, the Gwaden. When Delaz issued the order to recall all forces and retreat,
Gato
attempted to sortie again in the YMS-09R-2 Prototype Rick-Dom Zwei, but Delaz told him that Dolowa has already been sunk, and convinced him to retreat with him so they can regain their glory in the future.
After the end of the war, he went into hiding in Von Braun, waiting for the right time. At this point, he fell in love with Nina Purpleton. However, on U.C. 0081, September 17, he left her behind and rejoined the Delaz Fleet. He had a kill score of approximately 200, though due to the Principality's strict rules on kill scores and the fact that many of his kills were unable to be confirmed in the chaos of battle, his official kill score was around 100. Because of his reputation, he was even written into the Federation Forces' textbook on war history.
Gato
returns to the Earth in October of 0083 U.C. as a part of Operation Stardust. He infiltrates Torrington Base to seize the RX-78GP02A Gundam "Physalis", one of the Federation's two new Gundam prototypes, and its equipped nuclear warhead. Though pursued by Federation forces,
Gato
is able to escape back to space and rendezvous with the Delaz Fleet.
Gato
returns to Solomon since captured by the Federation and renamed Konpei Island. There, the Federation is conducting its Naval Review. Armed with the GP-02's nuclear weapon, he fires upon the Federation fleet, destroying two-thirds of it.
Throughout Operation Stardust, he repeatedly clashes with the Federation pilot Kou Uraki. At first,
Gato
views Kou as insignificant, but develops a grudging respect for him after their second battle at Konpei Island. During this confrontation, the GP-02 is destroyed. Shortly thereafter,
Gato
meets with Yuri Hasler of the Axis Advance Feet, and receives the AMX-002 Neue Ziel.
Gato
plays a key role in the ultimate colony drop, as he reprograms the thrusters to enable the colony to fall on North America. In the midst of this he is confronted by Nina, who pleads with him to stop; and then Kou, who shoots him.
Gato
is mortally wounded by the shot, but is able to return the Neue Ziel. Rather than escape, however, he waits for Kou to emerge in his RX-78GP03 Gundam "Dendrobium" and engages him in a final duel. Their duel is interrupted when they are fired upon by Bask Om, using the new Solar System II.
Gato
survives the blast, but finds himself surrounded by Federation Forces. Rather than surrender,
Gato
orders the remaining Zeon troops to charge for the Axis Advanced Fleet. Although they fight bravely, most of the Zeon pilots attempting to break through Federation lines are killed, including
Gato
, who chooses to crash the Neue Ziel into one of the Federation's Salamis-class cruisers in a suicide attack.
During Operation Stardust,
Gato
has command of his own fleet, which is centered around
Gato
's flagship, the Musai-class cruiser Peer Gynt. His fleet is destroyed at the conclusion of the operation.

Delaz Fleet

The Delaz Fleet is a remnant force of the Zeon Army, centered on the Imperial Guard under the direct command of Gihren Zabi, and declares war against the Earth Federation government in the year 0083, three years after the end of the One Year War.

Federation

The Earth Federation Forces (abbreviated as E.F.F.) are the military branch of the Earth Federation government.

Zeon

The Principality of Zeon, also referred to as the Duchy of Zeon and Zeon Dukedom, was in control of the colonies of Side 3 and fought against the Earth Federation during the One Year War.

MS-09RS Rick Dom

A variant of the Rick Dom that had its generator enhanced for the testing of mobile suit-portable beam weapons. It was armed with a "beam bazooka", an experimental high-powered beam cannon originally used by mobile armors. Due to issues with the cooling system, the beam bazooka was impossible to mass produce and only assigned to a small number of veteran pilots.

Battle of Solomon

On December 24, U.C. 0079, the Battle of Solomon was fought for control of the asteroid. The battle was rather one-sided in favor of the Federation, as it was the first battle that saw wide-scale deployment of the Federation's mobile suit forces. After the battle, Solomon was used as a staging area for the EFSF's invasion of the Principality of Zeon's home territory and was renamed "Konpei Island".

Battle of A Baoa Qu

Operation Star One, also known as the Battle of A Baoa Qu, was the final battle of the One Year War. During this battle, the Earth Federation Forces attacked the space fortress A Baoa Qu, one of the Principality of Zeon's last remaining strongholds. However, Zeon fired the superweapon Solar Ray at the Federation fleet while they were en route to A Baoa Qu, destroying one-third of the fleet. The remaining Federation fleet continued with the attack as planned, leading to a prolonged fleet and mobile suit battle at A Baoa Qu. In the end, the fortress fell to the Earth Federation Forces and both Gihren Zabi and Kycilia Zabi were killed. With the death of most of the Zabi family and their last line of defense broken, Zeon was forced to sign a peace treaty with the Earth Federation, ending the war.

Rick-Dom Zwei

Late in the One Year War, the MS-09R Rick Dom was redesigned under the United Maintenance Plan into the MS-09R-2 Rick Dom II. The YMS-09R-2, as its name and model number suggested, was a prototype of the Rick Dom II. Its appearance shared much in common with the MS-09F/trop Dom Tropen.

Operation Stardust

Operation Stardust was a large-scale military conflict between the Earth Federation Forces and the Zeon Remnants group Delaz Fleet that took place in late U.C. 0083. Though brief, this conflict had lasting impact, leading to a second colony drop on Earth, the rise of the Titans, and eventually, the Gryps Conflict.

RX-78GP02A, GP-02

The Gundam "Physalis" was initially supposed to be an assault-use, heavy mobile suit similar to the Principality of Zeon's Dom series. This was eventually dropped and replaced by the goal of being the most powerful MS to date. Inadvertently, this led to the Physalis being armed with the most deadly weapon available, a nuclear warhead. The second research division of Anaheim Electronics in charge of developing the Physalis was mainly comprised of former Zeon engineers, so Zeon-based technology is strongly incorporated into the mobile suit.

Konpei Island

Formerly an asteroid base under the name "Solomon", It was captured by the Earth Federation during the One Year War and renamed to "Konpei Island"

Neue Ziel

This massive mobile armor is donated to the Delaz Fleet by the Axis Zeon remnants who have made their home at the asteroid base Axis, in the outer reaches of the solar system. Technologically far superior to the mobile armors of the One Year War, the Neue Ziel is fast, maneuverable, and is also protected by an I-Field. It features large thrusters throughout the body, giving it high mobility despite its large size. In addition to its arsenal of missiles and mega particle cannons, it also sports a pair of computer-controlled claw arms which allow even non-Newtypes like Anavel Gato to carry out the dreaded multi-directional "all-range attack".

MS-14A Gelgoog

A high-performance mobile suit produced by the Zeonic Company, the MS-14A Gelgoog is the result of Zeon's attempt to field a mass-production unit that can rival the performance of Earth Federation's RX-78-2 Gundam. It was equipped with a full-sized shield, a twin beam sword (also referred to as a "beam naginata") and a beam rifle, a first for a Zeon mobile suit. The Gelgoog has superior specifications in every aspect to the MS-06F Zaku II and even the MS-09R Rick Dom.

Operation British

Operation British was a Principality of Zeon military operation in the early stage of the One Year War. It was intended to destroy the Earth Federation Forces headquarters at Jaburo by dropping a space colony onto it. Though the colony did not hit its intended target, it still resulted in massive casualties on Earth, destroying a fairly large chunk of New South Wales & annihilating Sydney.
