Sonic the Hedgehog is an anthropomorphic alien hedgehog with super speed who hails from Mobius. After being forced to flee to Earth to escape those seeking his power, Sonic remained in hiding for ten years until he accidentally made his presence known, becoming the target of the sinister Dr. Robotnik. However, thanks to the help of Tom Wachowski, Sonic managed to defeat Dr. Robotnik, and banished him from Earth and establish himself a better life with the Wachowski family.

Knuckles the Echidna is an anthropomorphic alien echidna with super strength and is the last of his kind. A proud and honorable warrior, Knuckles spent most of his life searching for Sonic the Hedgehog, believing him to be the key to finding the Master Emerald, which he saw as his ancestral birthright. To this end, he would form an alliance with Dr. Robotnik — one that would later prove to be a scheme for Robotnik to take the Master Emerald for himself. Knuckles befriended Sonic after Dr. Robotnik betrayed him and joined forces with him and Tails to defeat Dr. Robotnik.

Miles Prower, better known as Tails, is an anthropomorphic alien fox with two distinct twin-tails, which allow him to fly. This ability, however, resulted in his alienation from the people of his village, believing himself to be an outsider. After discovering Sonic the Hedgehog, however, Tails found a hero to look up to, whose own unique powers helped him to see his weirdness in a positive light. When later learning that Knuckles the Echidna was after Sonic, Tails tracked Sonic down to warn him. In the process, he would join Sonic on his adventure to protect the Master Emerald from Dr. Robotnik and Knuckles, becoming close friends with Sonic along the way. After later defeating Dr. Robotnik, Sonic, Tails and Knuckles formed a new order to protect the Master Emerald from evil adversaries together.

Thomas Michael Wachowski is a human and the town sheriff of Green Hills, Montana. He is also the husband of the local veterinarian, Maddie Wachowski, and the adopted father of Sonic the Hedgehog. Growing world-weary in Green Hills, Tom ambitiously sought to move to San Francisco for new opportunities to protect others from danger. Before his relocating to his potential job, he went on an adventure with Sonic who helped him realize his importance as a hero to the citizens of his home town. Eventually, after helping Sonic dispose of Dr. Robotnik, he was convinced to stay in Green Hills, where he took Sonic in as a member of the Wachowski family.

Maddie Wachowski is a human and the most respected veterinarian in Green Hills, Montana. She is also the wife of the town sheriff, Tom Wachowski, and adoptive mother of Sonic the Hedgehog. Eventually deciding to move from her sleepy town to San Francisco with Tom so he could live out his dreams, Maddie travelled ahead of Tom to look for a new home. When Tom arrived with Sonic however, Maddie agreed to help the two get Sonic off Earth. Following Sonic's triumph over Dr. Robotnik, however, Maddie and Tom decided together to stay in Green Hills, where they took Sonic in as a part of the Wachowski family.

Agent Stone is a human and Dr. Robotnik assistant and best friend. When Sonic revealed himself on Earth, Agent Stone assisted Dr. Robotnik on his quest to capture Sonic. After Dr. Robotnik got banished from Earth, Agent Stone began following Dr. Robotnik’s manifesto in order to elevate himself above the common man using science, eventually becoming the owner of the Mean Bean Coffee Café in Green Hills. After Dr. Robotnik returned to Earth with Knuckles, Agent Stone returned to work for him on his quest to find the Master Emerald and be recognized throughout the galaxy. After Dr. Robotnik got the Master Emerald, he and Agent Stone used the Giant Eggman Robot to attack Green Hills until Sonic defeated them, though Agent Stone managed to survive their defeat and elude capture by G.U.N..

The Chaos Emeralds are seven mystical gemstones that possess powerful properties and abilities. Ages ago, they were fused together by the echidnas to create the Master Emerald, creating an object of ultimate power. Centuries later, the Chaos Emeralds returned when the Master Emerald was shattered, only to disappear after Sonic the Hedgehog used them to save the universe.
