Curiosity, and maybe a little ingrained mechanic’s helpfulness, nudged at Theo. He signaled, pulled over onto the shoulder a safe distance ahead of the stranded car, and put his truck in park. “Well, let’s see what the drama is,” he muttered to himself, hopping out.

“Rough day?” he asked, his voice easy and amiable.

He leaned in, peering under the raised hood. started to rattle off potential issues, “Fuel pump relay? Distributor cap maybe? Crankshaft position sensor could be acting up…”

He straightened up, offering a reassuring grin. “Okay, scratch all that techy talk. Basically, your car’s being a brat and not starting. Sounds like it’s got juice in the battery ‘cause the lights are working, but something’s stopping it from actually, you know, vrooming.” He mimed turning a key and making engine noises, hoping to connect.

He pulled out his phone. “Tell you what, I’m headed back to my place anyway – got a garage just a few miles up the road. Hayes Automotive. Ever heard of it?” He didn't expect her to, it was a small place still trying to make a name for itself. “Let me call a buddy of mine with a tow truck. We’ll get your car hitched up and back to my shop. We can take a proper look in the morning, figure out what’s causing the drama. Sound good?”

Theo chuckled, already dialing the tow truck number. “Hey, no shame in that. That’s what folks like me are for. Consider it a rescue mission. Name’s Theo, by the way.” He offered his hand, a warm, genuine smile lighting up hisface. “And don’t worry, we’ll get you back on the road, one way or another.”
